On November 30, 2023, during the “World’s Best Rice” competition held in Cebu, Philippines, engineer Ho Quang Cua and his renowned ST25 rice brand triumphed over competitors from Cambodia and India to clinch the top prize. This achievement is a significant source of pride for the agricultural sector as a whole and specifically for Vietnam’s rice industry, affirming the status of Vietnamese rice in the international market.
ST25 Rice – A Triumphant Comeback
This competition, organized by The Rice Trader as part of the Global Rice Trade Conference, featured 30 rice samples from over 10 countries around the world. The final results for the Top 3 were as follows: ST25 rice by engineer Hồ Quang Cua claimed the prestigious first place, followed by rice from Cambodia in second, and India securing the third spot.
Notably, this is not the first time ST25 rice has received accolades. Back in 2019, The Rice Trader’s World’s Best Rice competition catapulted ST25 to global fame. In 2022, engineer Hồ Quang Cua was once again honored with the distinguished “Lifetime Achievement Award” for his significant contributions to the development of the rice industry in Vietnam and worldwide.
ST25 – A Fragrant Specialty Rice Variety from Soc Trang
ST25 rice is renowned as a specialty aromatic rice variety hailing from Soc Trang province. It was developed by a team of engineers, including Mr. Ho Quang Cua, Dr. Tran Tan Phuong, and Ms. Nguyen Thị Thu Huong. This research project began over a decade ago, and by 2014, the ST25 variety was ready for trials.
In early 2016, they started large-scale experimental planting of ST25 rice. The results were impressive, yielding as much as 7 tons per hectare due to its short growth cycle and superior disease resistance compared to many traditional rice varieties. Beyond its exceptional quality, ST25 also adapts well to the changing climate conditions of the Mekong Delta. Moreover, this rice variety thrives in saline and alkaline soils, making it suitable for integrated farming systems that combine rice and shrimp cultivation.
ST25 – Rice Quality that Meets International Standards
ST25 rice, also widely known by its brand name “Gạo Ông Cua,” boasts exceptional qualities that set it apart from other rice varieties on the market today. The grains are long and translucent, and when cooked, they retain their natural aroma. Additionally, ST25 rice cooks up to be both tender and fluffy, remaining moist even when cooled. These characteristics not only cater to the preferences of local consumers but have also garnered international acclaim.
With its recognition and accolades from various international competitions, Soc Trang has emerged as a leading region for high-quality aromatic rice. This achievement serves as a testament to the strong progress of Vietnam’s agricultural sector on the global rice map.

After winning the prestigious title of “World’s Best Rice 2023,” ST25 rice has secured a strong position and become a point of pride for Vietnamese farmers.
